The day I met Marie Dick I was visiting her home in order to interview her husband, Michael. Marie had been out shopping while Delores Louie (an Elder-in-Residence at Vancouver Island University where I teach) and I taped Michael telling us about his childhood and his training to become a licensed practical nurse.

I remember Marie coming home. Tired from shopping, she joined us in the living room of their small house. We introduced ourselves and quickly determined that she and Delores were connected through family. That led to a lot of laughter and questions. It also made our visit more relaxing. As we continued with our interview, Michael added that his wife was also quite knowledgeable about Indian hospitals. Marie humbly admitted that she knew a few things. It didn’t take her long to remember details of her experiences. She was an unflinching storyteller, using plenty of emphatic hand gestures, and even laughing out loud several times during her tale.

Marie’s story is short and powerful. It seems as if the memories about the staff are impossible for her to forget, so she started her story with those.
